While Yellow Birch Outfitters strives to have as much as we can produced here in the good old US of A, there are just some things that are iconic enough to warrant their inclusion. Besides, what's more American than allowing something to immigrate here! This country is a melting pot of cultures and peoples, and it is one of the things that makes us great. Opinel is one of those things. These Carbon steel pocket knives are a shining example of why some things shouldn't change. Made in Savoie France since 1890, they have become a design icon.
Weighing in at a scant 1.6 oz, it's a perfect EDC for those of us whose occupations don't involve kicking in doors (for those, it's a great backup!). The full convex grind, carbon steel and thin blade profile make for the most amazing food prep knife you'll ever lay your hands on (or wood carving for that matter), and the classic single piece beechwood handle is sculpted profile with generous palm swell that keeps your hands comfortable for hours as you toil away at the work at hand.
The locking mechanism is simplistic genius! The stainless steel collar and lock ring rotate at the pivot to both lock the blade closed, as well as open. It is definitely one of the safest knives I have ever handled, and have no problem handing it off to other to use while in the field without having to worry about the blade closing on their fingers should they ever be so inclined to use it the wrong way.
I have been carrying a No. 8 for years now, and it was actually the first knife I ever used in my leather business... true story!
The price of these knives still boggles my mind. They perform WELL above their meager price, and cut like knives that cost hundreds more. At this price, you can keep one in your haversack, one in your cook kit, one in the glove box (you'd be amazed at how many times I've been glad to have done that), and one on you at all times. They also make fantastic gifts for friends, scouts, and the uninitiated. Start someone off right with a safe, reliable tool that they can count on!

DISCLAMIER!!!
Now, let me lay this out right here for you This is NOT a modern wonder-knife. If you try and pry anything with this, it's going to bend... or break. In the old school way of thinking (of which I am a big fan), a knife is a knife, and that's IT. You use a knife to cut things. If you need to chop, get an axe. You want to baton, get a fixed blade (or a froe if that's your thing). These were designed in the age of specific applications, and mistreating your knife was a sure sign you weren't a man worth his salt. The good news with that is that a knife designed in this way will cut like no other knife you have ever used before. That's a promise. Designers didn't have to worry about how it was going to handle abuse, because you didn't abuse your tools...
