As odd as the phrase "Keep a Lucifer in your pocket" may sound, it's what outdoorsmen have done for generations. Now don't get all silly on me, a Lucifer is a very old name for a match... and a match case is an idea just as old.
Before the days of the Bic lighter, matches were the modern convenience. They still hold a very special place in the heart of a traditional woodsman for some very good reasons. For starters, try lighting a lantern with a Bic... it's a royal pain in the hand (quite literally). The length of a match, and the fact that you can light it and place it under a tinder pile to burn makes for a much easier fire (and a much safer start to one). The challenge however (known very well to those of us who have had to start a fire in the rain) was, and still IS how to keep them dry.
Many designs have come and gone in the pursuit of dry match perfection. This one by far has come the closest. The story I heard goes something like this: The founder of K&M was a black powder aficionado, and created this amazing match case. Early on in his marketing efforts to get noticed, he would send the match case in the mail inside a tank of water. When the package reached the intended company they opened the tank, removed the match case and upon opening the match case itself, found the matches COMPLETELY dry. The tight tolerances, and double O-ring seal ensure YOUR matches will stay dry, even if you were to go deep-sea diving (though I wouldn't recommend trying to light a fire down there).
I can tell you from experience that this is the most incredibly bomb-proof match case you'll EVER find. I've been carrying the same one for over 10 years. True story! The brass on mine has formed this amazing patina on it as well from all those excursions into the New England woods. I carry light anywhere matches in mine, and for good reason! K&M leaves the bottom of the removable cap rough as a light anywhere surface! No soggy sandpaper for me, just sweet, sweet heat. The button compass in the cap serves as a general direction finder in a pinch, and acts as a great backup to my normal compass.
This solid brass match case is guaranteed to become a treasured heirloom, and comes complete with spare lanyard, a second set of o-rings, and a protective cap for the compass. As always, it's MADE IN THE USA (Idaho in fact!).
Here are some facts straight from K&M:
Each case is individually milled from solid bar stock. Standard model to be used with regular strike anywhere matches. Weighs 2 oz and measures 3 3/4" long. Holds 21 standard matches.
