First, let me tell you that the Finnish word for knife is (roughly) Puukko, so you'll have to pardon me if I don't call this a Puukko knife. It would be the same as me calling an ATM an ATM machine. All kidding aside, in the world of iconic knives, the Puukko is right up there with the Sgian Dubh, the Bowie, and the Japanese Higonokami.
Used in Scandinavian countries dating back around 1000 years (yeah, I put the right amount of 0's in there!) it was traditionally the smaller of two knives carried by the Sami peoples. It was also the one most often used for anything from fishing, to hunting, to survival in the brutal climates that far north. the single bevel on either side of the blade to the edge is unparalleled when it comes to woodworking, and there's nary a Bushcrafter out there that doesn't favor their "scandi-ground" knife. And with good reason. These knives are time tested and proven to be some of the best woods knives in existance!
The Puukko by Kellam Knives is the culmination of generations of experience. Hand crafted in Finland the full tang carbon steel blade butts up against a brass bolster and black liner. Your hand wraps around a stained and perfectly sculpted curly birch handle that just begs to be used. The end of the tang is peened over a brass ferrule at the butt of the handle ensuring everything stays right where it needs to.
All of this is contained in a beautiful leather sheath that friction fits the knife perfectly. The looks of this setup are timeless and harken back to the best of Finnish traditions, while inside the sheath a modern plastic liner sits for the blade to nestle into so you never have to worry about your knife poking through, regardless of what you're doing.
Apologies to all of you lefties (myself included) as the sheath is a righty-only affair. We'll be glad to make you something though, just reach out and let us design the perfect sheath for your setup!
As affordable as this knife is, it is the perfect bush knife for the budget conscious, the beginner, as well as the seasoned adventurer!
