It is a well documented fact that our military has used Cribbage to while away the nervous hours between battles, or in the stifling confinement of a submarine. In fact, the oldest commissioned sub in the US Fleet carries a cribbage board that has been passed down since World War II! Cribbage has been around a long time, and with good reason. It's fun, easily learned and especially in this case, easily portable!
While roaming around the net one day, I came across this picture of a great little cribbage set made in 1942. Now, I'm definitely one for nostalgic items, quality, and leather, so I decided I needed to revive this piece for our generation.
This cribbage board is constructed from a sturdy 5 oz vegetable tanned and hand-dyed leather with 9 oz undyed vegetable tanned leather making up the playing surface. The whole assembly is then stitched together with #138 thread and sealed. Pouches on the front hold two sets of pegs, and the flap secures everything closed. The hand punched board is sized for standard 1/8" (3mm) pegs.
At only 3 oz. in weight, you can take a great and historic way to entertain yourself wherever you go, be it camping, traveling, WWII reenacting, or a two man fox hole. (If you're going to do that though, make sure you've got one eye on your 10 to 2).
